Early Voting: March 11-18th

Today is the first day of Early Voting!

Livingston voters will have the chance to pass a one-cent sales tax that will fund a 10% pay raise for Livingston Parish School Board employees. This would be the first sales tax dedicated to raises in Livingston since 1987.

The following locations serve as early voting locations in Livingston Parish:

Denham Springs-Walker Branch
8101 US Hwy. 190
Denham Springs, LA 70706
Livingston Registrar of Voters
20400 Government Boulevard
Livingston, LA 70754

Early voting polls are open from 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

In a survey of Livingston School District employees conducted by the Livingston Federation of Teachers, over 80% of respondents said they support the proposed sales tax. This overwhelming majority pointed towards the need for raises. Livingston Parish teachers are underpaid compared to surrounding parishes and there hasn’t been a new sales tax dedicated to employee raises in thirty-six years. Teachers and school employees have had to wrestle with increased cost of living and inflation without increased compensation, which has caused many teachers to leave Livingston for higher paying districts or to pursue an alternate profession.

The Livingston Federation stands with the majority of Livingston teachers and school employees in support of this one cent sales tax measure.

“It’s hard to propose a measure that everyone will be 100% satisfied with, but the fact is Livingston educators need a raise and this is how we’re going to get it. I hope that everyone will recognize the importance of investing in our teachers and school support staff by voting for this measure,” said Tamara Cupit, President of the Livingston Federation of Teachers and a teacher at Denham Springs Freshman High School

Groceries, gasoline, and prescription drugs will be exempt from the tax. Superintendent Murphy announced that he plans to donate his portion of the raise to charity.

All Livingston Parish voters are encouraged to participate in this election. Election day is March 25 and early voting will take place from March 11 - March 18 (excluding Sunday March 12th).
